Join us for a selection of the creative and the alternative in porn, followed by a question and answer with Stoya and Jiz Lee. “I don’t know what it is, but I know it when I see it.” - United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, 1964 The definition of modern pornography is intimately tied up in a history of the legal and moral attempts at its censorship. Justice Potter Stewart’s infamous phrase points to a difficulty in the discussion of an entire genre of cultural production: that its definition has been, and remains, elusive. The films for this screening are collected to invite the viewer to question: What is a pornographer? What is an aesthete? What constitutes the “hard-core” in porn? What happens to the sexual act itself when you film it, and how does the filmmaker’s choices turn that act into, or away from, pornography? How do we define sex, anyway, and who gets to define it?
