Throughout antebellum history, free and enslaved African Americans worked and lived in proximity to each other, even marrying and raising families together. Dr. Green shares the story of a Maryland free black community called “The Hill," believed to be one of the oldest in the Mid-Atlantic region. Historian Heather Andrea Williams shares research from her book "Help Me to Find My People: The African American Search for Family Lost in Slavery."
