America has always been a nation that put political, cultural, & social ideals into its marriage laws & customs. Such as, spousal choice over arranged marriage, or cracking down on divorce after the Civil War, marriage has been model of American values. As European Jews came to America during the 19th century, marriage became a way to adapt into American culture & reshape it.
